Patrick Seaton on Innovative Management Tools Building Fortunes Radio Show talks with Peter Mingils about The follow up that annoys instead of advances
Poor Follow Up: When Sales Efforts Annoy Instead of Advance the Process
In sales and business development, follow up is often described as one of the most important skills a person can learn. The phrase “the fortune is in the follow up” has been repeated for decades because many opportunities are lost simply because people give up too soon. However, there is another side to the discussion that is often overlooked. Poor follow up can actually damage relationships and create resistance rather than move the selling process forward.
Many people confuse persistence with repetition. They assume that calling every day, sending constant text messages, or repeatedly asking, “Did you make a decision yet?” demonstrates commitment. Instead, it often creates frustration for the person receiving the communication.
People are already overwhelmed by emails, phone calls, notifications, and demands on their time. When follow up lacks purpose, it can feel like pressure rather than service. Prospects begin to avoid calls, ignore messages, or mentally disconnect from the conversation entirely.
Effective follow up should always add value. Each contact should provide a reason for reconnecting. It might include useful information, an answer to a previous question, a helpful resource, an industry update, or clarification about a product or service. Follow up should move the relationship forward instead of simply reminding someone that you are waiting.
Timing also matters. Too much contact can feel overwhelming while too little contact can cause a prospect to lose interest. The balance comes from paying attention to the other person’s communication style and respecting their pace.
Great sales professionals understand that relationships are built on trust. The objective is not to chase people endlessly. The objective is to help people make informed decisions.
The best follow up leaves people feeling educated, respected, and appreciated. The worst follow up leaves people feeling pressured and annoyed.
In business, follow up should never become a race to wear someone down. It should be a process designed to create confidence and move both people toward a better outcome.
